Getting Interviews? What is working for you?

Contrary to the what the media will make you believe, companies are still hiring people. Naturally that means job seekers are interviewing. You simply need to understand that the job hunt will require more effort, patience, and creativity.  One job seeker told me she produced a white paper that simplified a business process in her industry. She attached it to her VisualCV profile.  Then, she searched blogs, Twitter and Linked-in groups that hosted discussions related to her industry and expertise. She posted helpful ideas and suggestions while at the same time referring to the white paper on her VisualCV profile when it was appropriate to do so. She was seen as a subject matter expert rather than a desparate job seeker. As a result, her efforts led to an interview. If you are interviewing, or started a new job (even better), I want to hear from you.  What is working for you?

I stopped listening and associating with other unemployed people. Most watch the news, which is depressing and doesn’t help their job search. Then they want to pull me down with them.

I used Gadball.com to quickly upload my resume to many Job Boards. It was free and saved me hours of time from doing it all on my own. I looked at resume rabbit too, but it was $59. Are these the same services as resume spider?

Thank you for the question. You should continue to post your resume to job board databases and use any tools at your disposal to save time. This is just one of many strategies for getting an interview. However, most employers do not pay to get access to these databases. As a result, you should not expect much from your time investment.

ResumeSpider is a tool for job seekers that increases your ability to network. We put your resume directly into the hands of people in companies expecting to hear from us. Read more here: http://www.resumespiderblog.com/2008/12/01/jobsearch-resume-spider-and-the-resume-distribution-concept/

  4. Jonathan, I think you have stumbled upon a real secret here. As much as I advocate for the unemployed I do know that many people fill their days and hours with unproductive thoughts. It is said that if you want to get a cold get around someone with a cold.

Unfortunately, the ranks of the unemployed do not always inspire potent, productive dialogue. There are a lot of sources and people that do.

But I recommend to my clients to focus on getting around employed people, especially those who are in positions to hire.

It’s tough to focus on the positive when you feel you are in a negative situation. But do so. Make sure you are doing and saying all that you can to the positive. And if you get around someone or information that is negative, turn it around.

People are attracted to a positive, forward looking person who does not dwell on temporarily negative circumstances.
